Every voice in Sandbook

Sandbook ships 41 natural text-to-speech voices: 28 in US and UK English (20 American and 8 British), plus Spanish, French, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese and Hindi. All of them are included, none are locked, and all of them run on your iPhone or iPad rather than on a server. Every one is on this page with a play button, so you can hear the voice before you download the app.

In short

What text-to-speech voices does Sandbook have, and do any cost extra?

Sandbook ships 41 voices, including 28 English voices (20 American and 8 British), plus 3 Spanish, 1 French, 2 Italian, 3 Brazilian Portuguese and 4 Hindi voices. Every one is included free, with no in-app purchase and no locked premium row. They are Kokoro-82M voices generated on the device at 24 kHz, on iPhone 12 or later and A14 iPads running iOS 18.2. 41 natural text-to-speech voices, all included

Every voice here is a style embedding for the same model, Kokoro-82M, running on the device's GPU at 24 kHz. There is no basic tier and no premium tier, no “AI voices” charged separately from “standard voices”, and no voice that needs a connection to speak. The 41 voice packs ship inside the app, which is part of why the download is large.

That is the honest form of the “most natural sounding” claim. Among text-to-speech apps that run entirely on the iPhone and cost nothing, these are the most natural voices we know of, not the best voices on any phone, and not a match for a hosted service with a thousand of them and a monthly bill. Press play on a few below and settle it before you install anything. Want to hear your own sentence instead of ours? Try the voices online, in this browser, free.

What differs between these voices is language and character, not quality: how warm, how fast, how formal, how much the reading leans into the sentence. A voice that suits a thriller is rarely the one you want for a specification document, so the app is built around trying them rather than reading a list.

Press play on any voice below. These are the same Kokoro-82M model and the same voice packs the app ships, speaking the line Sandbook uses for its own in-app auditions, in each voice's language: “Take care of people and the world, and make good new things.”

Nothing is fetched until you ask for it: the page ships no audio at all until you press a play button, and each clip is about four seconds and 30 KB.

In the app the same audition runs live rather than from a file. The voice picker groups voices by language, every voice has a play button that speaks a sample on the spot with the model on your device, and voices you like can be starred so a shortlist stays one tap away.

Every voice on this page is included in the free download. There is no in-app purchase in Sandbook, and nothing here is sold separately or unlocked later.

Picking a voice for what you're reading

The most natural sounding English voices for fiction are the expressive ones: Heart, Bella, Kore and Isabella carry dialogue and shift tone across a sentence. Fable and Onyx suit anything with weight to it: history, horror, a long-form essay you want read seriously.

Non-fiction and documentation are easier to follow in something even and unhurried, where you notice the argument rather than the performance: Adam, Alloy, River, Emma and Eric hold a flat, clear line for an hour without wearing on you. If you listen at higher speeds, the calmer voices stay intelligible further up the range than the animated ones do.

For anything you're studying, try the same paragraph in two voices before committing to a 400-page book. It takes thirty seconds and saves several hours.

Six voice languages: how they work

The English catalogue is 20 American voices and 8 British ones. Sandbook 1.0.4 added 13 more: Dora, Alex and Santa in Spanish; Siwis in French; Sara and Nicola in Italian; Dora, Alex and Santa in Brazilian Portuguese; and Alpha, Beta, Omega and Psi in Hindi. French has one voice today, so if French is your main language, you are choosing Siwis.

The voice decides the language. To listen to a Spanish book, give that book a Spanish voice; the book remembers its voice and speed, so the next English book you open keeps its own. The clean-up that reads dates, prices, units and acronyms naturally applies to English text only.

The app itself is available in English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil) and Hindi. There is no voice cloning, no custom voice creation and no pronunciation dictionary, and there are no voices outside these six languages. The 41 voices on this page are the complete set, and they are the same 41 for everyone.

Speed changes the delivery, not the pitch

Speed runs from 0.5× to 2.5×, and it is applied inside the model by scaling the predicted duration of each phoneme rather than by speeding up a finished waveform. That is why a voice at 2× still sounds like that person reading quickly, with its pitch and character intact, instead of the chipmunk effect you get from resampling audio.

Each book remembers its own voice and speed. The samples above are all at 1×.

Questions about the voices

How many voices does Sandbook have?

41. There are 28 English voices, 20 American and 8 British, plus 3 Spanish, 1 French, 2 Italian, 3 Brazilian Portuguese and 4 Hindi voices. All of them ship inside the app and every one is free from first launch.

Are any of the voices paid or locked?

No. Sandbook has no in-app purchase, no subscription and no premium voice tier, so there is nothing to unlock and no voice that sounds better if you pay. Every voice runs the same 82-million-parameter model at 24 kHz.

How do I listen to a book in Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese or Hindi?

Pick a voice in the book's language. The voice decides the language, so a Spanish book read by a Spanish voice is pronounced as Spanish. Each book remembers its own voice and speed, so an English novel and a Hindi article can sit side by side in your library with different voices. The clean-up of dates, prices and units before speaking applies to English text alone.

Can I hear a voice before I use it on a book?

Yes. Every voice on this page has a player, so you can hear all 41 in the browser before you download anything. In the app, the voice picker has an audition button on every voice that speaks a sample sentence live with the real model, and you can star the ones you like so they stay at the top.

Are these voices available offline?

Yes, all of them. Each voice is a small style file bundled in the app alongside the model, so nothing is streamed or downloaded when you switch voices. Changing voice works in airplane mode.

Where do these voices come from?

They are the voice set of Kokoro-82M, the open-weight TTS model Sandbook runs on-device through Apple MLX. The names and character descriptions are the model's own; in the app the audio is generated on your iPhone or iPad, not licensed from a cloud speech service.

Audition them, star two, start a book

Forty-one natural text-to-speech voices in six languages, twenty-eight of them in American and British English, every one included in a free download and generated on your own device. You have heard them here; star the two you like and start a book.
