The no-subscription Voice Dream Reader alternative for iPhone and iPad
Voice Dream Reader has been the reference iOS reading app for over a decade, and most people looking for a Voice Dream Reader alternative are looking because of what it now costs. Sandbook covers the central part of that job — a book, a natural voice, read-along text, all offline — for free on iPhone and iPad, and leaves out a great deal of the rest.

In short
What is a free Voice Dream Reader alternative for iPhone?
Sandbook reads EPUB, PDF, web pages and scanned pages aloud on iPhone and iPad with a neural voice on the device, free, with no subscription, no account and no cap, where Voice Dream Reader requires a subscription from $4.99 a month. Voice Dream wins on breadth: 27 languages in its free voices, DAISY and Bookshare, bookmarks, iCloud sync and continuous playback with the screen locked. Sandbook has 41 voices in six languages and needs iOS 18.2 on an iPhone 12 or later.

What a Voice Dream Reader alternative has to cover
Voice Dream Reader is a mature accessibility tool. It reads PDF, Word, PowerPoint, RTF, Google Docs, DRM-free EPUB, DAISY and Bookshare books and MP3/MP4 audiobooks; it has an OCR scanner, bookmarks, annotations, iCloud Drive sync, and — its listing says so directly — "All voices work offline and play in the background even with the screen locked.".
Its iOS listing covers iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, plus Apple Watch and Apple Vision. Mac is not on that listing: it is a separate Mac App Store app, version 2.0.2, last updated 19 May 2025. And the app is free to download only in the sense that the download costs nothing — the same listing states that a subscription is required to access it, with a free trial for new users.
Sandbook is one free iPhone and iPad app with a neural speech model inside it. 41 voices in six languages, EPUB, PDF, web pages and camera scans, word-by-word highlighting, no account, no purchases, no server doing the speaking. That is the whole surface.
Where the voices come from
This is the interesting difference, and it cuts both ways. Voice Dream's offline voices are the 36 built-in iOS system voices across 27 languages, plus 200+ licensed premium voices in 30 languages from Acapela, NeoSpeech and Ivona, bought individually at $4.99 one-off (US iOS App Store) or included with a plan. That is an enormous catalogue, covering languages Sandbook has no answer for, though those voice families are older engine designs than a modern neural model.
Sandbook runs Kokoro-82M — 82 million parameters, bundled in a download of about 276 MB with all 41 voices included — on the GPU through Apple MLX, at 24 kHz. One model, 41 voices (28 in US and UK English, plus Spanish, French, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese and Hindi), no tiers and nothing to buy. There is no way to add a voice.
The honest summary: Voice Dream has far more voices and languages; Sandbook has a newer engine and gives you all of it for nothing. Audition both: Sandbook's voices page has a sample of every voice, and the app synthesizes each audition live with the real model, so what you hear is what a chapter sounds like.
Where Voice Dream Reader wins
- It keeps reading with the screen locked. Sandbook's real-time reading pauses when the screen locks, because the model holds GPU memory while it runs; only a chapter prepared ahead of time plays locked. If you listen to whole books while walking or driving, this alone decides it.
- Languages: 27 offline system languages and 30 for premium voices, against Sandbook's six.
- Formats — Word, PowerPoint, RTF, DAISY, Bookshare, Google Docs and audiobooks, on top of PDF, TXT and EPUB.
- Bookmarks, highlights and annotations, none of which Sandbook has.
- iCloud sync of library, reading position, bookmarks and notes across devices; Sandbook keeps everything on one device.
- Apple Watch and Apple Vision, plus a Mac app sold separately on the Mac App Store, where Sandbook is for iPhone and iPad.
Where Sandbook wins
Price, with no asterisk: free, no subscription, no per-voice purchase, no cap — against a listing that asks for a subscription before the app opens at all. No account, no ads, no tracking, and your books never leave the device. And a modern neural TTS model as the default rather than a paid add-on.
Two smaller things it does well: it rejoins the invisible line breaks and hyphen splits PDF layouts leave behind, so papers read as prose; and the read-along loop, with word-by-word highlighting, auto-scroll, tap to read, auto-advance between chapters and each book opening where you stopped, is the part of Voice Dream people use daily, at no cost. Both apps scan printed pages on the device.
You can also type a sentence for Sandbook's voices online and hear them before installing anything.

Free offline alternatives to Voice Dream Reader on iPhone, ranked
Voice Dream Reader is on-device, but its own listing states that a subscription is required to use the app, so it is not on a list of free ones. These are. Sandbook publishes this list, so it is labelled.
Sandbook(the app this site is about)
Free with no in-app purchase and no cap: all 41 Kokoro-82M voices (28 in US and UK English, plus Spanish, French, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese and Hindi) from first launch; EPUB, PDF, web pages and camera scans with word-by-word highlighting; no account. Real-time reading pauses when the screen locks (prepared chapters play locked), it has 6 voice languages, fewer than some multilingual readers, and no DOCX, iCloud sync or whole-book export.
Free with no In-App Purchases row on its listing, reading PDF, EPUB, DOCX, web pages and camera scans in 31 languages, and its own site says the audio is generated on your device. It never names the speech engine.
EPUB and PDF turned into audiobooks with word-level read-along, background playback and a sleep timer, on a choice of three on-device engines. Free covers three books and three voices; the rest is $4.99/month or $33.99/year.
Already on the phone, free, and on-device once an Enhanced Quality voice has downloaded — worth trying before installing anything. It reads what is on screen: no library, no EPUB or PDF importer, and no reading position kept per file.
Ranked on four things in this order: what it costs with nothing held back, whether speech is generated on the device with no connection, voice quality, and what the app does with a book once it is open. Only apps whose own pages establish both the price and the on-device synthesis are listed.
Questions about switching from Voice Dream Reader
Is Sandbook a full Voice Dream Reader alternative?
No, and it would be dishonest to say so. Voice Dream has bookmarks, annotations, iCloud sync, far more formats, many more languages and continuous playback with the screen locked. Sandbook replaces the core loop — import a book, hear it in a good voice, follow each word — for free and offline, and adds camera scanning and web pages, but nothing like Voice Dream's full toolkit.
Voice Dream Reader is a free download. What am I actually paying for?
Access to the app itself. Free to download, but the listing states: "A subscription is required to access the app. A free trial is offered to new users." The in-app purchases run from a $4.99/month subscription through annual plans at $39.99/year, $59.99/year, $79.99/year, with named premium voices sold individually at $4.99 one-off. Sandbook has no purchase of any kind in it and nothing gated behind one, which is the entire argument this page is making.
Does Sandbook read DAISY or Bookshare books?
No. It reads EPUB, PDF, TXT, RTF, Markdown and HTML files, plus typed or pasted text, the clipboard, and a web article by URL. DAISY, Bookshare, DOCX, PowerPoint, MOBI and AZW3 are all unsupported. If your library is in accessible formats, Voice Dream remains the right tool.
Does Sandbook sync between my iPhone and iPad?
No. There is no account and no iCloud sync, so each device keeps its own library and its own reading positions. The upside is that nothing about your reading exists off the device; the downside is that you start a book twice if you read it on both.
How we compared
Every figure on this page comes from Voice Dream Reader’s own public pages — the listing on the US App Store, the pricing page and the privacy policy — read on 14 September 2026. Prices, limits and features change without notice: where this page and the other app disagree, believe the other app.
Sandbook publishes this comparison, so read it as our argument rather than a neutral review. Everything in the Sandbook column is what the app does today, and you can check all of it in the app itself.
